My 2-Month Carnivore + Fruit Experiment 🥩🫐 Surprising Highs, Lows, & Everything In Between
A Little Backstory: My Journey Through Keto and Carnivore
Over the past eight years, I've tried every variation of low-carb eating: starting with keto, moving to full-on carnivore, and focusing on high-protein, high-fat living. This way of eating did wonders for me, like helping me balance my hormones, getting my period back, and conceiving my adorable son.
But as someone who’s always researching (and slightly obsessed with optimizing my health), I came across studies suggesting that long-term strict keto or carnivore diets might impact women’s metabolism. Interesting, right?
So, I decided: why not experiment with adding a bit of fruit back into my life?
My First Mistake: Going Overboard with Fruit
Lesson learned: if your body has been on a strict carnivore or low-carb diet, don't suddenly devour a mountain of fruit. I went all-in with a full fruit platter for breakfast, and, well, my body freaked out. Pimples popped up on my face, and my skin became super sensitive. Not the glow-up I was hoping for!
So, I dialed it back, taking inspiration from others online and even checking out Reddit threads. I limited myself to one piece of fruit a day and saved it for dessert after dinner. My skin calmed down, and my energy stabilized—win-win.
My Secret to Enjoying Fruit Without Overindulging
Treating fruit as a dessert was a game-changer. Imagine this: after a hearty carnivore-style dinner, savoring a crisp Granny Smith apple or a juicy peach. It’s a perfect sweet ending without derailing my high-protein, high-fat foundation. Plus, it adds a little excitement to my fridge beyond eggs, butter, and meat. Seriously, the pop of color from fresh fruit makes me smile!
What About My Energy Levels?
I expected that eating fruit would transform my workouts, but here’s the surprise: I still felt energized sticking to my usual routine of lifting weights and doing daily walks. Incorporating fruit at night didn’t give me an extra energy boost, but it also didn’t make me feel sluggish.
Speaking of workouts, I’m obsessed with the FORM app, which offers daily strength and feminine-style exercises. I even became an ambassador! (Psst, use my code “Louisa” to get a special annual discount if you’re curious!)
Digestive Perks and Surprises
On a strict carnivore diet, I used to have infrequent, solid bathroom trips. But when I added fruit, my digestion sped up, and I started visiting the bathroom more regularly. Pineapple and coconut gave me a bit of bloating (not fun), while bananas were surprisingly easy on my system.
The Battle With Sugar Cravings
Adding fruit did, however, awaken my sweet tooth. Suddenly, I found myself craving more sweet things. Even my morning coffee tempted me to add a splash of something sugary, which I’d never felt before. It's fascinating how even small dietary shifts can change cravings!
So, Will I Stay Carnivore or Embrace the Fruit Life?
After this two-month fruit experiment, I’m leaning toward a balance. My body feels best on a high-protein, high-fat diet. But around my menstrual cycle or during intense workouts, I’m open to adding carbs like honey or raw milk. It's all about listening to my body.
My biggest takeaway? Don’t fear fruit. Respect it. Enjoy it. And always remember: it’s not a race. Health is a journey. Take your time, do your research, and most importantly, figure out what feels best for YOU.
